Climate action

We are constantly working to reduce our CO2 emissions in all three scopes and our target is to reduce 90% of scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 compared to 2019). Our efforts are anchored in three main pillars; Net-zero operations (Scope 1 and 2), Energy efficiency (Scope 1 and 2) and Decarbonization of value chain (Scope 3).
Our climate actions are paying off maintaining a low level of scope 1 and 2 in 2023 compared to 2022 while significantly increasing the production volume. This brings us to a total reduction of 77% since 2019. Now, the journey continues.

Science Based Targets initiative approved targets.

SBTi has classified our scope 1 and 2 target ambition as in line with a 1.5°C trajectory.
Overall Net-Zero Target:
  • NKT Cables Group A/S commits to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by 2050.
Near-Term Targets:
  • NKT Cables Group A/S commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 90% by 2030 from a 2019 base year. *
  • NKT Cables Group A/S commits to increase active annual sourcing of renewable electricity from 18% in 2019 to 100% by 2024 and to continue active annual sourcing of 100% renewable electricity through 2030.
  • NKT Cables Group A/S commits to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services and use of sold products 27.5% by 2030 from a 2019 base year.
Long-Term Targets:
  • Maintain a minimum reduction of 90% absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions from 2030 through 2050 from a 2019 base year*
  • Reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services and use of sold products 90% by 2050 from a 2019 base year*
*The target boundary includes land-related emissions and removals from bioenergy feedstocks.

Low-carbon power cable production

In 2021, all our factories have switched to using renewable electricity significantly reducing our scope 2 emissions. This green move has played a key role in cutting our CO2e emissions significantly in the past years. In 2022, we have extended the initiative so most of our offices now also use 100% renewable electricity.
The change in energy supply is documented by EU Guarantees of Origin, market-based instruments which are certified by an auditor. The guarantees provide proof that our electricity consumption is based on renewable energy for the power cable production in Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, UK, Poland and Czech Republic.

Decarbonization of value chain

An important element in our journey towards net-zero emissions is to decarbonize the materials used in our cables and accessories, which accounts for a significant part of the corporate carbon footprint. To drive the decarbonization process forward, we are running a long-term supplier engagement program with our main suppliers to build a sustainable supply chain.
See more information about our supplier engagement program in the Sustainability Report.

EV-mobility and alternative fuel

Electrical car charging station
Fuel for stationary and non-stationary equipment account for a significant part of our CO2 emissions and reduction in fuel consumption is central to reducing our environmental impact.
We are converting processes and machinery to run on renewable electricity or fossil-free fuel. The transition of our company fleet to electric/hybrid vehicles (EV) has been initiated and to support this change, electric chargers have been installed at several sites. We have started the stepwise transition to electric cars in 2021 and aim to have a fully electric fleet by 2025.
At the high-voltage power cable factory in Karlskrona, Sweden, the majority of forklifts are powered by electricity or biofuel, and the transition from fossil-fuel has reduced CO2e emissions from internal logistics by 80% compared to 2020. Experience gained from the successful introduction of alternative fuel at the Swedish factory in Karlskrona is now enhancing internal logistics company-wide and we target to only use fossil-free fuels for our land-based vehicles by 2027.
